Decreasing World Suck: One teddy bear at a time

About 3 years ago I found a book at the library about charity knitting. This book had descriptions of charities and how to help them along with patterns for knitting projects. The one charity that stuck out in my mind was The Mother Bear Project. This Minnesota based organization accepts hand knit and crocheted teddy bears and ships them to children in Africa and Haiti. The bears are sent to schools, hospitals and orphanages. For many of the children who receive a bear, this is the only toy/comfort object/ prized possession they own. What’s more is that many of these children have lost one or both parents because of HIV/AIDS. Every child deserves to be loved and that’s what these bears give them. They are a message that someone in the world loves you and made this bear just for you. The Mother Bear Project has sent out over 65,750 bears (and counting). In 3 years I sent them 36 hand made creations. Each bear is as unique as the child who receives it. Knitters/ crocheters are extremely creative when making these little bears. I have personally drawn inspiration from Harry Potter, Doctor Who, close friends, and now the Vlogbrothers. Pictured above are bears I modeled after 2 nerds that have taught me how to never forget to be awesome. Hank is wearing a yellow shirt with a corndog stitched proudly on his chest. John has a red shirt with a delicious slice of pizza stitched on. Best Wishes!
